In this session of the CRI Seminar Series, the CRI will present two case illustrations of how natural language processing (NLP) was applied to turn clinical textual data into meaningful research.

Tomasz Oliwa, PhD and Brian Furner, MS will present a case illustration of a successful research project, where various sample information was extracted from pathology notes with a combined supervised document classification, named-entity recognition and relation extraction method. A browser-based approach to accelerate the project-specific manual corpus annotation process will also be discussed.

In the second case illustration, a research project will be showcased in which NLP was applied to learn characteristics for retention in care or lost to follow-up (LTFU) among people living with HIV (PLWH) from progress notes.

Join us to learn how, by extracting information from text and turning it into accessible knowledge, previously untapped textual data sources can be harnessed to help drive research projects.
