SUMMARY:CANCELED: Using Annotations and NLP in Clinical Data Analytics
DESCRIPTION:Due to current precautions to slow the spread of COVID-19\, this event will be postponed until later in the spring.\n\nUsing Annotations and NLP in Clinical Data Analytics\nSpeaker: Tomasz Oliwa\, PhD\nDate: Wednesday\, March 25\, 2020\nLocation: KCBD 1103\nREGISTER NOW\n\n\n\n\nDomain-specific text annotations enable untapped and largely unavailable analysis options; however\, the trove of unstructured and semi-structured clinical text is largely not enriched with these. \nIn this month’s session of the CRI Seminar Series\, we will present practical introductory examples of how to annotate a text corpus\, and illustrate how texts with their annotations can be turned into meaningful research through application of natural language processing (NLP). \nTomasz Oliwa\, PhD\, will showcase an annotation tool setup for multiple annotators\, and discuss practical examples of different granularities of annotations\, annotation curation\, search within a corpus\, named-entity recognition and machine learning/classification. \nJoin us to learn how\, by annotating text and turning it into accessible knowledge\, previously untapped textual data sources and options can be harnessed to help drive research projects. \nAbout the speaker: Tomasz Oliwa received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Georgia\, and obtained a Diplom-Informatiker degree from the University of Koblenz-Landau\, Germany. Before joining the CRI in January 2015\, he was a postdoc at the Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago (TTIC). Tomasz is interested in all aspects of software engineering and practical applications of natural language processing and applied machine learning. He is experienced with the development and deployment of scientific tools\, databases\, and web-based interfaces in a variety of programming languages such as Java\, Python\, and Bash to facilitate the processing of research data. \nAbout the series: Since 2012\, the Center for Research Informatics has offered free training sessions for the University of Chicago community in informatics research tools and techniques. Topics include REDCap\, clinical data\, bioinformatics analysis\, data visualization\, high performance computing\, grant preparation\, and more. Sign up for our email list to hear about upcoming seminars.
